Start your spring cleaning with cleaning out spyware, trojans and other stinkware from your Windows PC.
1) Start with checking for virus definition updates for your antivirus software. If you do not have an antivirus software, then get one ASAP! There is a free version here: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt6.php?avg6=fe
Make sure to run a full system scan otherwise your antivirus software is not so effective.
2) Next, let’s visit Windows Update and download and install some updates. The most important updates are always those marked “Critical”. When you are finished, do a restart.
3) Now, lets do a trojan scan at the free checkpoint: http://www.trojanscan.com/ (You need Internet Explorer for this to work). Trojans are generally programs that are invisible and can record every keystroke and command you make on your PC — in other words, not nice programs to have…
4) OK, with that over with, download “SpyBot – Search and Destroy” (I like that name!
) from here: http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download — and also Ad-Aware Standard: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
These two programs scan for spyware and adware programs that tend to record your surfing behaviors and slow down your computer. Run one of the programs at a time and let them scan your computer for the pestware.
5) Finally, the treatment for many problems is preventing it from even appearing. Thus, SpywareBlaster is the name: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
This program helps you keep pestwares such as adware, dialers, trojans and bad websites from even reaching your computer.
Finally, make sure to have a nice spring and summer 2004!
